About me

Hi everyone!
My name is Nadishana. I'm a multi-instrumentalist and composer residing in Berlin. Here's my story in short.

In the beginning of the '90s I started to play guitar because of some music I encountered that stunned me. It was a time without internet or traveling possibilities, but actually music was our traveling and internet.

Music can give you an experience of instant travel and instant connection, we all know that. Music also can give you a new identity: that is what helped me to survive quite difficult times back then. I still remember those moments. Listening to Shakti, Allan Holdsworth and Gentle Giant for the first time and being completely stunned. There was life before this turning point and after, and I never turned back.

I've been playing music for more than 30 years already. I started as a self-taught guitar player. Later on I discovered traditional music from different cultures and I was deeply fascinated by it. We had tapes back then, it was still an analog era. Tape cassettes were the main medium for music in that time, so often you could hear those amazing instruments on the record, but you had no idea of what the name of it was or how it looked like.

So I started to build some experimental instruments myself, because I wanted to be able to play this kind of music, but there was no other way to acquire those fascinating folklore instruments. This is how I started to learn various unusual instruments.

The project

My latest passion is handpan. I've been playing handpan already for 10 years but I took it VERY seriously 6 years ago :). At that time I got my set of 3 double-siders (6 scales on 3 pans) which I'm touring with and since then I've been practicing almost every day.

I would never have imagined that I would dive deep into this instrument because I didn't like it when I tried it for the first time around 2005. It was a Panart hang and i remember i thought: "why did they castrate a steel pan and make it pentatonic??" 😂
 
Later on I was touring with Steve Shehan and David Kuckhermann and seeing them playing made me realize that handpan is in fact a completely unique phenomenon, the new group of instruments, which I call melodic finger percussion. Handpan solely represents this group because other melodic percussion is played by mallets (i.e. marimba, vibraphone)

This instrument is a new exciting journey and a field of endless creativity. I believe that so far we discovered only 3% of the handpan. I'm really looking forward for us, the community of players to discover the other 97% of it. And with this album I want to inspire everyone to go on that discovery path! 💪😊

The project I'm working on now is a double album of the handpan music called "Relict". This is my 14th release (you can check my whole CD catalog here) but my 1st album fully dedicated to the handpan.

This album sums up my long adventure with this instrument and my effort to create a new vocabulary for the handpan, adopting the techniques from other instruments to it, inventing new techniques, exploring various articulations and textures, experimenting with uncommon chord progressions etc.

One CD will contain the music performed on the handpan only, and the 2nd CD will be dedicated to the duo/trio works where the handpan will be presented in combination with other instruments. Some tracks are already recorded, and some tracks will be recorded in the next half year.

The material you will listen to on this album is a result of my true love for handpan, sincere dedication to music, and radical practice that I have put into it!

Nadishana .

Nadishana (Siberia - Berlin) is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and designer of experimental musical instruments. He's an innovator in the field of contemporary ethnic music and one of the musicians who are shaping and developing the culture of melodic finger percussion (handpan, rav). The use of odd meters, polyphony, 'split hand' technique, progressive harmonies, complex articulation - are characteristic features of Nadishana's original style. He elaborated the unique playing technique on each of his instruments and his own approach to advanced digital audio editing called "sound microsurgery"
